First Steps

From Solipsis

The blue window shows you what’s around you in the Solipsis world. Since you are a pioneer, the world is nearly empty and what you see around you are mostly bots with names like ‘a1-bu’.

Table of contents

Avatars

You’d better change your appearance to look different than those ugly robots: go in the avatar menu and do configure. You can choose any picture you’d like, the program will reshape and resize it for you.

If you are behind a NAT, a “firewall” or an http proxy, in other words, if you don’t have a direct connection to Internet, you’d better choose one of the predefined avatars if you want others to see you. The problem is that your picture cannot be transmitted (in the present implementation) crossing “firewalls”. If you choose a predefined picture, everybody already has it and the avatar you chose won’t need to be transmitted.

If you want to use your own picture, you’d better know that the whole file will be uploaded to the people you meet, so avoid 10MB images that will slow everybody. Knowing that the shown image the avatar will be the biggest centered circle that fits inside your picture, you can also crop the image to focus on what you want to be shown, hopefully your face.

Profile

When you meet someone, you may want to know the name, the country, the hobbies of the user behind that avatar. The profile service gives you the opportunity to configure yourself by entering the information you want to freely divulge.

You also have to notify the files you want to share in the Profile Windows.

Chat

Besides walking around, the only thing you can do for now in Solipsis is text chatting. Go on the chat menu and do "chat with all peers". When you meet some ‘real’ person, someone you can chat with, her name will appear in the users box of the chat window.

Don’t run as you chat. You can only chat with your neighbors so you will lose your pals if you go away.

The message windows scrolls too far so the text becomes invisible (That’s a MS Windows only bug, we have asked BG to correct this, we are still waiting)

Meeting Points

A Meeting Point can be seen as the bistrot of Solipsis :

  • standing in the surrounding of a Meeting Point is the simplest way to discover some people and, maybe, new friends. Of course, some Meeting Points may have little of interest for you but recall that you are free to go further;
  • a Meeting Point is also a good point to meet your friends or to have a rendezvous. See you tonight at the usual place !

There are currently some known and confirmed meeting points. Here is a list of current meeting points. Feel free to add some new meeting points or to discard the ones that do not exist anymore.

If you want to create your own Meeting Point, you certainly want more informations on meeting points.
